FAQs

What are the carvings made out of?

All of my carvings are made from locally sourced logs. These come from trees that have been safely removed by tree surgeons because they were damaged, dead, diseased, or posed a risk, giving new life to wood that would otherwise go to waste. Custom carvings can also be made from a specific type of wood upon request.

What are the delivery options?

Carvings can only be delivered within the UK. All carvings are delivered by courier. Delivery cost is based on your postcode, size and weight of the carving. Prices start from £5 upwards, the delivery cost will appear at checkout once you have typed in your delivery address.

How do I look after my chainsaw carving?

Wood is a natural material and will develop small cracks over time. This is a normal part of its ageing process and often adds to the sculpture’s unique character. While I take every effort to minimise cracking during creation, a few simple steps can help preserve your sculpture.

The most common cause of cracking in the first few months is rapid drying. The carvings are made from green wood, meaning they still hold moisture inside. When the outside of the wood dries faster than the inside, this causes the outside to shrink at a faster rate, leading to cracks. It is particularly important in the first few months to keep the carving in an environment where it can dry slowly:

Keep the sculpture out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources such as radiators. Rapid warming in a heated house with dry air could cause it to crack more.

The best place for a carving is outside under shelter, as this will allow it to dry slowly in humid conditions. Carvings can be kept inside in a cool area of the house, away from radiators. However, if small cracks start to appear in the first few days, it may be better kept outside, at least for the first few months, to slow the drying process.

When displaying outdoors, apply an oil/solvent-based wood preservative, such as a clear decking oil, every 6 months for the first year, then once a year after that. Oil allows it to dry slowly and will provide protection from rot.

Avoid leaving your carving submerged in water or in damp conditions for long periods. Keeping your sculpture on a well-drained surface, such as gravel or concrete, will help prevent rot.

Following these simple steps will keep your carving in good condition, allowing you to enjoy it for many years.

Although rare, severe cracking can sometimes damage important features of the carving, such as the face. If this happens, repairs may be possible for a small fee. If a severe crack occurs in the first 6 months, I will repair this for free, other than the cost of postage.

Thank you again, and please contact me if you have any further questions about caring for your carving.
